We don’t make it a habit of making fun of kids who are just starting their singing careers. In fact we applaud them for having the guts to do what most adults never would. But that doesn’t mean they are immune from criticism.
Take 11-year old Harper Gruzins for instance. She is is singer/songwriter from Coppell, Texas. According to her website she plays the guitar and piano and is “able to write songs that seem amazingly deep for her age–yet still reflect her youthful outlook on life.“
Harper sang the “Star Bangled-Banner” at the Dallas-Los Angeles MLS match on Saturday, July 28th and it wasn’t pretty. Deadspin called it the worst national anthem ever.
The crowd looked confused as Harper struggled through her nearly three-minute rendition of the song.

The child has other YouTube videos online that show that just up to a year ago, at age 10, she really could sing. Just google her name. –She is most likely simply going through puberty and needs to wait to get adjusted to her new voice and learn how to use it. She has been used to singing with a young child’s voice. –Even though her voice is changing, she is still a child. Give her time and she will master her new voice too.
